Metal Fencing Derby
Metal fencing can cover a multitude of fencing types and styles, covering both commercial and residential properties. It is a catch-all phrase which could include commercial fencing such as palisade and mesh fencing, as these are both made from metal, through to vertical bar railings and all the different types of metal railings you could choose from. It can also include sheet metal fencing and metal bar fencing too.
At Metal Gates & Railings Derby our focus is on residential metal fencing, mostly utilising different bar options. This can also include estate fencing, which is a very subtle form of metal fencing and, as the name implies, is often used to section off or provide a boundary marker for large properties.
However, these days it is very commonly used within new housing estates to provide a subtle boundary marking across the front garden of each property, and also along any grassed areas in the development.
If you're not sure what type of fencing may be right for you, simply get in touch and our survey can discuss options with you.

Railing-Style Garden Fencing
For most gardens, the metal fencing people ask us for is railing-style: vertical bars between a top and bottom rail, finished with a ball, spear or bow top, and fixed between steel posts set in concrete. It keeps the view open, lets light and air through to the planting behind it, and needs very little looking after.
For family gardens we usually recommend ball tops, which are far kinder than spears to anyone climbing over after a lost ball, and bar spacing that a small child can't squeeze through. A matching gate can be made at the same time, so fence and gate share the same bars, tops and finish – the same approach we take with garden wall railings, just set into the ground instead of onto a wall.
The Spondon job at the top of this page shows how far a standard railing can be taken. Each bespoke panel has an arched top rail with the bars rising through it to fleur de lis heads, and the panels are fixed between ball-top posts set along the edge of the lawn, so the fence frames the front garden without hiding the house.
Estate Fencing
Estate fencing is the traditional horizontal-bar metal fence seen around parkland and farm fields: flat or round bars running between upright stanchions. It is almost invisible from a distance, which is exactly the point – it marks a boundary without closing off the view. Alongside new housing developments, it suits larger rural gardens, paddock edges and driveways where a solid fence would feel heavy.
Styles of Metal Fencing
Beyond railing-style and estate fencing, the main styles are contemporary, ornamental, chain link and bow top. The photographs below are examples of each style rather than our own installations.

Contemporary Metal Fencing
Choosing a modern style of metal fencing can look exceptional with a modern styled property. Typically this type of fencing will be selected for a self or custom build where it has been specified in the architectural and/or landscaping designs. The designs can vary massively, from thin minimalistic horizontal and vertical bars to a very chunky horizontal bar. This is the type of metal fencing we love to get involved with: if you have drawings and are looking for a bespoke design which follows your exact specifications, get in touch and we will happily provide you with a quote.
Ornamental Metal Fencing
For those looking for a combination of functionality and beauty, ornamental metal fencing is an excellent choice. This type of fencing combines the strength and durability of metal with intricate designs and decorative elements. Ornamental metal fences can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any property, making them a popular option for upscale homes and commercial establishments. This type of metal fencing differentiates itself from metal garden railings by having much less of a uniform sequence of vertical bars making up the bulk of the fence. Here scrolls, rings and interconnecting sections of steel provide a design which can be very strong as well as very striking in appearance.
Chain Link Metal Fencing
Chain link fencing is a versatile and cost-effective option for a wide range of fencing scenarios. It is commonly used in residential properties, schools, and recreational areas. Chain link fences provide excellent visibility, allowing you to keep an eye on your surroundings while maintaining security. Whilst this isn't a type of fencing we manufacture, as it is mass factory produced, it does come under the category of metal fencing and garden fencing. It is available in different heights and gauges to suit your specific needs, such as providing a small animal enclosure. If this is a type of fencing you are interested in installing, we are able to provide an installation service for chain link fencing.
Bow Top Metal Fencing
Bow top metal fencing is a popular choice for both residential and commercial properties due to its elegant and secure design. This type of fencing is characterised by its vertical bars that curve at the top into a gentle bow shape, providing a softer and more aesthetically pleasing look compared to traditional straight-top fences. Some people will classify it as a type of metal railing.
Bow top metal fencing is built to withstand harsh weather conditions and resist corrosion, making it a durable option outdoors. The fencing is typically made from high-quality steel, ensuring its longevity and requiring minimal maintenance over time. This makes it a cost-effective choice, as it eliminates the need for frequent repairs or replacements. Due to its safer topping, it can also be used as an alternative to estate fencing for residential front gardens.
Metal Fencing and Planning Permission
A new metal fence on a boundary generally doesn't need planning permission if it stays within the permitted development limits: up to 1 metre high next to a road used by vehicles, and up to 2 metres elsewhere. If the fence sits on a wall, the limit covers the two together. Listed buildings and some conservation areas are exceptions, so if either applies, check with your council before you order.

Frequently asked Questions about Metal Garden Fencing in Derby
How do you finish your metal fencing?
Fencing is welded, deburred and primed, then either hand painted or powder coated. On a fence the posts matter as much as the sections: they sit in wet ground and concrete, so the finish needs to be sound right down to where each post goes in. Powder coating is available in a wide range of colours.
Why choose Metal Gates & Railings Derby to supply & fit my metal fencing?
Because the same team measures, makes and fits the whole run, posts included. Our fabricators weld both MIG and TIG, so the sections are made to the exact lengths your boundary needs rather than the nearest stock panel, and you only make the final payment once you are happy with the finished fence.
What are the most popular metal fencing you install in Derby?
We install bow top fencing, but this is often for small businesses. For metal garden fencing this is often a metal railing style of fence, which for families will be ball topped to minimise potential injuries to young children who may try to climb over it to retrieve a ball from a neighbour's garden.
What colours are available for metal fencing?
There is a wide range of metal paint colours, although black is the most common, along with green for back gardens. If the fence has a topper, an alternative colour such as gold or silver is popular. If you have a particular colour in mind simply let us know, and if our regular metal paint suppliers do not have anything suitable we will look further afield.
How do you fit your metal fencing?
The fixing of metal fencing will largely depend on the ground. If we are fitting into soft ground, we will use metal posts dug and concreted into the ground, in a similar fashion to concrete fence posts, and then fit the fencing sections between the posts.
Do I need planning permission for a metal fence?
Usually not, as long as it is no more than 1 metre high next to a road used by vehicles, or 2 metres elsewhere, including any wall it sits on. Listed buildings and some conservation areas have extra restrictions, so check with your council first if either applies.
