Metal Handrails Derby
Handrails are an essential element in any building, whether it be a home, office, or public space. They provide support and stability for individuals as they navigate stairs, ramps, or other potentially hazardous areas. Handrails not only serve a functional purpose but also play a critical role in enhancing the safety and accessibility of a space.
At Metal Gates & Railings Derby we can provide a variety of handrails, so we can accommodate your particular needs and preferences. Some popular options include ornate metal handrails, and metal & glass handrails. The choice of material often depends on factors such as durability, aesthetics, and maintenance requirements.
Along with a wide range of styles, colours, and finishes available, our bespoke handrails can complement the overall design and architecture of a space, creating a cohesive and visually appealing look. By choosing handrails that match a building's aesthetics, property owners can achieve a harmonious and attractive environment. We install the handrails we fabricate too, so we are a one stop shop for your handrail requirements.
Bespoke Outdoor Handrails
If you live in Derby & are looking for bespoke outdoor hand rails, simply get in touch. We will send our surveyor to you to discuss your requirements & provide a quote.
Bespoke Handrail Design
A bespoke handrail starts with the steps it is going on, not a catalogue. At survey we measure the run, the rise and the angle of the steps, look at what the rail can be fixed to, and talk through how decorative you want it to be. The handrail is then drawn, fabricated to those exact measurements and fitted by us.
Wall-mounted or post-mounted
Where there is a sound wall alongside the steps, a rail on brackets is the simplest and least obtrusive option. Where there isn't, or where the rail needs to guard an open side, it is carried on posts fixed into the steps or the ground, with spindles between them.
Spindles and balusters
Straight bars for a clean, modern look; twisted bars, basket twists, scrolls and bowed balusters for something more traditional. These are the same details used in wrought iron gates, so a handrail can be made to match an existing gate or railings.
Rail ends
A rail can finish with a scrolled end, turn back into the wall, or stop at a post. A returned or scrolled end is kinder to coat sleeves and bags than a cut end, and it signals the end of the rail to someone feeling for it.
Material
Mild steel for most outdoor handrails, powder coated; stainless steel where a bright, maintenance-free finish is wanted; and aluminium where weight matters.
Garden Handrails
When it comes to outdoor metal handrails, functionality is key, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. There are many decorative handrails for outdoor steps available that can enhance the look of your outdoor space while still providing safety and support.
Metal dominates the material choice for decorative outdoor handrails; this can be either mild steel or wrought iron. Wrought iron handrails have a timeless and elegant look that can add a touch of sophistication to any outdoor staircase or balcony, but they are more expensive than mild steel. Since either will be finished in a hard-wearing powder coat paint, most people will opt for the steel option, although as a number of decorative components are made from wrought iron it is likely you will have a combination of the two.
Most of the decoration of handrails is in the spindle or baluster section; simply selecting bowed balusters can dramatically change the feel of outdoor hand railings. Scrolls, loops, baskets and floral designs can be welded within and between spindles for a totally bespoke design created by you.

Handrails for Front Steps and Garden Paths
Some of the most useful handrails we fit are also the smallest: a short rail beside two or three front doorsteps, along a sloping path, or down a set of garden steps. Front steps are often worn, uneven and wet, and a rail to hold is the difference between using them confidently and avoiding them.
For anyone less steady on their feet, a rail on both sides of the steps is worth considering, so there is always one on the side of their stronger hand, going up and coming down. The rail should be comfortable to grip all the way round, run continuously from the top step to the bottom one, and extend a little beyond the top and bottom steps, so there is something to hold before the first step and after the last.
Interior Handrails
Interior handrails are an essential part of any staircase or balcony, providing both safety and style to a space. Whilst there are several different types of interior handrails to choose from, we focus on ones where metal is one of the main ingredients, so we don't make wooden handrails.
Our all-metal handrails offer a modern and sleek look to a space, especially as we can fabricate them in various styles. We can keep lines straight and minimalistic for a contemporary feel, or add additional curves and detailing to the spindles for older properties, or those that simply want a more cottage-style decor. Our metal handrails are durable and low maintenance, making them a popular choice for both domestic and indoor industrial spaces.
When people refer to a glass handrail, it is the guard section or baluster which will be glass, as the actual rail which is held is not glass. The handrail and metal posts between glass guard sections are perfect for creating an open and airy feel in a space. For residential properties, stainless steel handrails and posts complement glass very well.
Wrought iron handrails add a touch of elegance and sophistication to a space. They are highly customisable and can be designed to include intricate scrollwork and decorative elements. Wrought iron handrails are durable and long-lasting, making them a timeless choice for traditional and vintage-inspired interiors.
More recently, cable handrails have started to become a trendy option for interior spaces. They consist of stainless steel cables strung between metal posts, creating a sleek and modern look. Cable handrails are low maintenance and allow for unobstructed views, making them ideal for spaces with a view, and are cheaper than glass – although, as they are much more open, they may not be the best choice for homes with young children or pets.
We are more than happy to discuss the options with you, as the right staircase handrail and banister will make a dramatic impact on the aesthetics of your home's interior space.
Handrail Height and Building Regulations
For stairs inside a home, the Building Regulations guidance in Approved Document K sets out the main numbers:
Height
The top of the handrail should be between 900mm and 1000mm above the pitch line of the stairs – the line joining the front edges of the treads.
One side or both
Stairs less than 1 metre wide need a handrail on at least one side; wider stairs need one on both sides.
Guarding
Where a stair, landing or balcony has an open side, the guarding in a house should be at least 900mm high inside, and 1100mm on an external balcony. Gaps should not let a 100mm sphere pass through, to protect small children.
Garden steps are not usually covered by the same rules, but the same numbers are a sensible benchmark outdoors too. Businesses and public buildings have additional access requirements; tell us how the rail will be used and we will build to suit.

Frequently asked Questions about Handrails in Derby
How do you finish your metal handrails?
This will depend on the material. Stainless steel is generally left as it is, as it is weatherproof and looks good without additional finishing treatment. Mild steel handrails will generally be zinc primed and then powder coated, which can be in a wide selection of colours, although black continues to be the most popular colour, especially outdoors, followed by dark green.
Why choose Metal Gates & Railings Derby to fabricate & fit my outdoor metal handrails?
Because we design, fabricate and fit the handrail ourselves. Our fabricators weld both MIG and TIG, which means we can work in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium, and every handrail is made to the exact length, height and angle of your steps. You only make the final payment once you are happy with it, rather than buying a rail in one place and an installer in another, and finding the two blame each other if it doesn't fit.
What is the most popular metal handrail material in Derby?
For businesses, indoors or out, stainless steel bar handrails are the most popular. Whilst initially a more expensive material, once fitted they require minimal maintenance and look stylish and clean. For residential indoor handrails, a fairly simple handrail mounted on twisted metal spindles is popular, and for outdoor garden steps more ornate designs are usually requested.
What height should a handrail be?
For stairs in a home, Building Regulations guidance puts the top of the handrail between 900mm and 1000mm above the pitch line of the stairs. Outdoor garden steps are not usually covered by the same rules, but the same height is a sensible guide, and we will agree it with you at survey.
Do I need a handrail on both sides of my steps?
Inside a home, stairs 1 metre wide or more should have a handrail on both sides, and narrower stairs on at least one. Outdoors it is a choice, but for anyone less steady on their feet a rail on both sides means there is always one on the side of their stronger hand, going up and coming down.
