Garden Wall Railings Derby

Metal garden wall railings are a fantastic addition to any outdoor space. Not only do they provide a stylish and elegant touch, but they also offer practical benefits such as security and safety. Whether you have a small patio or a sprawling garden, installing metal garden wall railings can transform your outdoor space into a beautiful and functional area.

One of the main advantages of metal garden wall railings is their durability. Unlike wooden or plastic alternatives, metal railings are built to last. They can withstand harsh weather conditions, including rain, snow, and intense sunlight, without deteriorating or losing their aesthetic appeal. This means that once you install metal railings, you can enjoy their benefits for many years to come.

Another benefit of metal garden wall railings is their versatility. With a wide range of designs, styles, and finishes available, you can find railings that perfectly complement the look and feel of your garden. Whether you prefer a modern and sleek design or a more traditional and ornate look, there is a metal railing option for every taste.

Metal garden wall railings provide an added layer of protection for your property. They act as a deterrent to potential intruders, making it more difficult for them to access your garden, and very difficult to sneak in unnoticed due to the open nature of wall railings.

Garden Wall Metal Railings

Garden wall metal railings can also enhance the safety of your outdoor area, particularly if you have children or pets. They create a barrier that prevents the temptation to climb onto the wall, thereby preventing accidental falls or trips and providing a safer environment for everyone to enjoy.

The additional height that garden wall railings add to a low-level wall can be a perfect way to contain a pet dog from simply leaping over your wall, which can be very important in a front garden. Clearly this won't be ideal if you have a gap rather than a gate to exit your property. If you are revamping the front of your property, matching the finish of your garden wall railings to seamlessly continue to your front garden gate can easily be achieved, so don't forget about your gate when aiming to install new wall railings. Installing metal garden wall railings is relatively straightforward, especially if you hire professionals like ourselves.

Maintenance of metal garden wall railings is minimal, making them a hassle-free choice. Regular cleaning with a gentle detergent and water is usually all that is required to keep them looking their best. Additionally, inspecting the railings for any signs of rust or damage and addressing them promptly can help prolong their lifespan.

Made to Measure Railings

No two garden walls are quite the same length, height or level, which is why off-the-shelf railing panels rarely sit right. Every set of railings we make is built to the wall it is going on.

The run of the wall

Each section between pillars needs measuring separately, because pillars are rarely evenly spaced and a panel that is a few centimetres out leaves a gap you will notice every day.

The height of wall and railing together

What matters is the finished height from the pavement or garden, not the railing on its own. We agree that with you at survey, along with the height of any matching gate.

Bar spacing

Where children use the garden, we can space the bars so that a 100mm sphere cannot pass between them – the same guidance used for balustrades. Mention it at survey: it is easy to build in and hard to change afterwards.

Walls that step or slope

On a sloping street the wall usually steps down in stages. Railings can follow each step, or run raked along the slope so the top rail stays parallel with the ground.

Decorative Wall Top Railings

The options for decorative wall top railings don't simply start and finish at the top of the vertical bars. Whilst this is an aspect that catches the eye, there are other options that can add more decorative features to your metal wall railings. Adding a basket weave to all or some of your vertical bars makes your railings more interesting, and the bars themselves can come round, square, twisted and curved, so there are many ways you can personalise the look of your garden wall.

We can include circles, crosses and decorative scrolls between bars. The combinations could seem endless, so if you have an idea you can even scribble it down and we'll do our best to manufacture to your specs.

Replacing Period Railings

Many Victorian and Edwardian front walls lost their original railings to the wartime scrap drives of the 1940s. You can often still see the evidence – cut-off iron stubs, or filled holes, along the top of the coping stones. Putting railings back is one of the simplest ways to return a period house to how it was meant to look.

Replacement period railings are made to suit the house rather than to a catalogue. Spear heads and fleur de lis suit most Victorian terraces, while plainer ball or flat-topped railings often sit better on Edwardian and inter-war homes. If a neighbour on the same street still has original railings, a photograph of them is the best brief you can give us.

Do Garden Wall Railings Need Planning Permission?

Most garden wall railings don't need planning permission, but it is worth checking before you order. Under the national permitted development rules, a boundary wall, fence or railing next to a road used by vehicles can generally be up to 1 metre high, and up to 2 metres elsewhere. That limit applies to the wall and railings together, measured from the ground, so a 700mm wall leaves room for about 300mm of railing on a roadside frontage.

Different rules apply to listed buildings, which normally need listed building consent for new railings, and in some conservation areas, where the usual allowances can be removed. If your home is in either, or you're unsure, check with your local council before work starts – Derby City Council inside the city, or the relevant district council if you're outside it. At survey we'll measure the finished height with you, so you know exactly what you're asking for.

Frequently asked Questions about Metal Garden Wall Railings in Derby

How do you finish your metal wall railings?

Once the railings are welded and the joints deburred, they are primed before the top coat goes on. You can choose a traditional hand-painted finish or powder coating. Powder coating is the tougher of the two and comes in a wide range of colours, while a hand-painted finish is simple to touch up in place on the wall, which some owners of period houses prefer. Either way, the aim is to keep water off bare steel, especially where the railings meet the wall.

Why choose Metal Gates & Railings Derby to supply & fit my metal wall railings?

Because the same team measures, makes and fits your railings. Our fabricators weld both MIG and TIG, so we are not limited to standard panels, and every run is made to the exact height and length of your wall. You only make the final payment once you are happy with the finished railings. Buy panels online and hire a separate installer, and if they don't fit, each tends to blame the other.

What are the most popular metal garden wall railings you install in Derby?

Whilst spear and fleur de lis were historically the most popular, and still are, ball top railings are now one of the most popular options. They provide a more modern finish, along with the simple flat top garden wall rail.

What colours are available for metal garden wall railings?

Almost always black for the railings themselves; we rarely fit a full run in anything else. Where colour does appear it is usually on the heads, with gold or silver fleur de lis and spear tops requested most. If you want a particular colour, tell us, and if our regular paint suppliers can't match it we will look further afield.

How do you fit your metal railings for walls?

Whether the wall has pillars determines both how the railings are made and how they are fixed. If pillars are present, we will screw fit each section of railings both to the top of the lower wall and to the sides of the pillars. Where we are fitting to the top of the wall only, we screw fit into the wall, and on a long run that needs strengthening, support posts are sunk into the wall.

Do I need planning permission for garden wall railings?

Usually not. Under permitted development, a boundary next to a road used by vehicles can generally be up to 1 metre high, and up to 2 metres elsewhere, measured as the wall and railings together. Listed buildings normally need consent, and some conservation areas have extra restrictions, so if either applies, check with your local council before you order.
